would you rent a place when you already own a house?

I know someone who went out and rented a house within a mile of their house. then turned around and rented out their house to someone else. The house they are renting is only slightly bigger than the house they own (less than 300 sq ft). but they are paying over $1,000 more in rent than the rent they are receiving for their house. The tenants are there for a year-long lease.

Why would anyone do this? keep in mind they rented out the other place first, so this isn’t a case of they were going to buy a new house and use their old house as a rental property investment, but the purchase of their new house fell through.
