Why should I (or should I not) get pre-approved from multiple lenders? (US – TX)

We just got pre-approved from a lender and some people are recommending that we “shop around” for multiple lenders for pre-approval. I thought that we could get pre-approved from one lender now, then, when we’re under contract, shop around for multiple lenders for the best rate. Is either of these strategies better than the other?
