When should I reach out to a lender to start my house buying journey?

Hey all

First time home buyer here. I’m looking into getting a Guaranteed USDA Loan through a local lender as I am on the low income side. I have done some number crunching and found that a USDA Loan fits perfectly for my situation. I’m currently in an apartment and my lease doesn’t end until October of 2022. I would like the closing date to match up with the month that my lease ends (it doesn’t have to be exact though as I know that there can be complications with USDA loans). I’m thinking of contacting the lender near the end of February 2022 to give me enough time to find a home and be prepared for any possible hiccups that might happen but I’m fearful that things might move too quickly and I end up closing before my lease is up. I can’t afford to break my lease early so I’m wondering when would be a good time to contact the lender to get started (on pre-approval and such). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
