My wife and I have been looking for homes since March in this crazy market. I’m going based off the MLS (OneKey) here in Long Island, NY. I’ve noticed some listings show different tax than when I check the towns assessment roll/portal. Now my question is, will I be paying around what what MLS is showing? Should I call the town, tell them how much the sale price will be and see if they give me a rough estimate of how much I’d be paying? I’m not sure how taxes here work. Whenever I see high taxes on a listing, I don’t even inquire about it.
Previously I was under contract on a home, but it fell through due to the seller not finding a home. The listing showed $10,300 taxes, but when I would check the tax portal for the town (Brookhaven), the owners were only paying $8,400 a year with no credits or exemptions.
