I’m a first time homebuyer. My wife and I have been following the market in our area closely for the last year and recently started hunting. We found a house we absolutely love in almost every way possible. We put an offer in on it and their agent told our agent there were no offers on it the day before the deadline. We were elated and to sweeten the deal and show we’re serious we put an offer in 10k over asking and asked them to cover half the closing costs. They accepted most of the terms but countered with asking 20k over the list price. The house is nice but not worth that, plus I’m using a VA loan and we and our agent highly doubt a VA appraiser would sign off on the house going for that price. What should our next move be? I feel like the seller was hoping for a bidding war and didn’t get that so they’re hoping we pay for what could’ve been, and it just seems ridiculous to ask for 20k over list price when you have no other offers coming in. Thanks!
