Hi! So I’m in the process of moving out of my current duplex. We’re not officially out until 9/30 but we’re moving into our new house 9/6. I just have a couple questions regarding what I legally have to do as I have received a letter basically threatening to take money from our deposit if we don’t do certain things that I never got charged for or had to do at other rentals.
To start we rent privately, in California, and have dealt with the owner directly for TWO years. All of a sudden we get a letter from a property management agency for our move out and when we asked our landlord about it she yelled at us. In the letter we were told we HAVE to pay to get the house carpet cleaned professionally and have a receipt for proof and that if it wasn’t cleaned well enough they’ll hire another place and be charged. Also the letter states we must paint or we will be charged from our deposit and if any lightbulbs are out we will be charged, and that we must hire a professional cleaner.
I just want to know what I’m actually responsible for because from what I’ve been reading I’m not responsible but I just want to get actual clarity to know my rights. We’ve gotten along great with our landlord up until this point when we questioned if it was actually mandatory for us to do and now she won’t respond to texts which is upsetting when we’ve been very low maintenance tenants and have taken great care of this house
To add: we went without heat for 3 months in the middle of winter until we had it fixed finally because she wasn’t getting it done. I read that it was her responsibility to have it fixed asap. I just feel confused and I want to know what my LEGAL responsibility is as a tenant. I feel as if I’m being taken advantage of since I’m a young adult and don’t know my actual rights. I just know something is off since I’ve never dealt with this before in the past 3 places I’ve lived and got my full deposit back with out what they want me to do.
Thank you to anyone with advice/help!!!
