Real Estate Agent Question

I am doing my 40 hour class now and I learned that sometimes sales contracts will be anywhere from 30 days to a whole year. That doesn’t seem like a good way to make money.

I then thought about having numerous contracts at once. Was wondering how common that is and how many some real estate agents are doing in a 40-hour work week? Is it common to see one real estate agent taking on lets say 5 sellers/buyers so that way if all goes well, they can make 5 commissions instead of 1?
