Question on seller’s access to house after closing date

Hi all, please let me know if there is a better place to ask this question!

Location is California

My father in law bought a house last year on a lot with farmland. The contract specified that he will have immediate access to the farmland, but the seller will have access to the house and premises for more than 1 year after the closing date. I’m wondering what does “access” mean in this case? I want to run it by this group before contacting a professional. If specific language is necessary I can provide an update later. I do know that it does not specify any kind of lease or rental agreement.

Mainly concerned about this as it relates to occupancy. Does “access” allow the seller to live in the house?
