So this is what happened. My mother in-law’s friend (Patty) got a divorce, and didn’t want her husband to get the house. So she asked my MIL to take over payments on the house because she didn’t want her credit score to be affected as well as she didn’t have enough money to pay for it at the time. My MIL starts to take over the payments on the house, while Patty is living rent free and I would say 6 months later she moved out. My MIL gets a tenant to start renting and he starts to make payments for rent, a little while later COVID hit, he stops paying rent, but it’s because Patty went to talk to him and told the tenant not to pay rent. Patty’s daughter gets her Real Estate License, and with Patty’s name on the house she sells the house. She only gave my MIL a small amount of when they sold the house, even though we had agreements not to sell as we were still making payments to the mortgage. My MIL made repairs to house, and still wants my MIL to pay the taxes after it sold. Seems very unethical, and need help figuring out if my MIL has any chance to get her fair share from the house when sold.
