I’m at a little bit of a loss with what to do. I’m a young renter who just moved into a house with 4 random roommates.
Some background: I moved into a house in Denver, CO with 4 roommates I had never met before. 3 of the roommates renewed their lease and myself and another roommates lease just started 08/01. A week or so after I moved in I noticed we had a huge leak from our kitchen sink through the floor into a basement bedroom and called the landlord immediately. As well as the basement toilet not flushing and the shower not draining. Mad that he had to address the problems he tried everything he could to not spend any money, asked that we just live with it that way. Obviously, I wasn’t okay with that and made sure he addressed all our problems. He told me it was my fault that I didn’t bug him more to get to the house (I wrote to him twice about it before I called, I have that documentation). Upon entering the house he noticed damages that had been caused the lease term prior. He is now charging us (current tenants) 3,500 in an array of “damages and labor”. I know he is charging us for all of these frivolous things because he’s upset I stuck up for us and got him to actually make repairs. I emailed and requested that I only be held responsible for a 150 charge which was the only thing that arose during my lease (only to get him off my back). He emailed me back belittling me and essentially saying no this is on you in the WORST condescending way. There was no move out inspection from the last tenants or any move in inspection with me.
I’m supporting myself on not a lot of income and 3,500 is a large amount of money. I appreciate any help or suggestions and will try to provide any additional details needed. I am new to CO and don’t have a good grasp of my rights as a renter. I also apologize if this was rambling, I tried to include all helpful details.
