We just got an offer accepted on a house in that we think will be a pretty great house hack once we finish out an ADU in the basement. We plan to live in the main house with our toddler and new baby and rent out the basement as a one or two bedroom apartment. We can afford the mortgage without a renter, but things will be a lot less tight with a renter.
We’re pretty handy and will be doing the ADU conversion ourselves. The basement has its own entrance and walkway to the house, it even has its own patio/yard area. There is already a full bath and a bedroom in the basement with an egress window and another rooms where we could put another egress window to make a second bedroom. There are laundry hookups, and space for a nice open kitchen/living space.
I’d love to hear other’s stories and advice about house hacking. What went well? What should we look out for? Any advice on things we should make sure to add to the apartment? Did you do long term or short term rental? Would you do it again?
