I’ve seen what the housing market will look like in 2050

Since there are so many posts here about the future of the housing market, I’ve travelled back in time to share what will happen between now and then. Some will say that I’m a fraud, but I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Below is a quick chronology:

2025 – Mortgage rates reach 7%, the /r/RealEstate community continues to make posts asking what will happen in 2026 and if they should offer $50k above asking price for a 250 square foot tool shed.

2030 – Mortgage rates reach 14%, yet every house still sells for 20% above asking price within 3 days. Some sellers opt to conduct a legal duel for competing buyers, legalized in 14 different states.

2034 – Tesla’s stock drops 99% overnight after Elon Musk’s death is announced during a SpaceX accident. The Shiba Inu-shaped rocket had been controversial in the engineering community, but this was the final design selected by Twitter.

2035 – Household brand names have begun diversifying their portfolios by entering the real estate market as investors. Only 7% of new home sales are now conducted by individuals. The two corporate winners in real estate for this decade: Kraft Heinz and Skechers. Domino’s Pizza is a close 3rd.

2039 – Rental prices have reached a point where they now represent 90% of the average net monthly income. As a result, there is finally a mass migration into the metaverse. People move out of their rentals and into public warehouses where rent is half as much, and they stay strapped into their VR headsets for 18 hours per day.

2044 – Every property in the metaverse has reached valuations of over $5M (2022 USD valuation) due to artificially constrained supply. 80% of all virtual real estate market is owned by six individuals, who become the first quadrillionaires. They’re worshipped by the media due to their unimaginable wealth.

2050 – The physical world is mostly uninhabitable, rendering homes in the real world worthless. Virtual homelessness spikes due to the supply cap created in 2022, which is still enforced in order to not disrupt the value of existing homeowners. A new subterranean world is being built for the poor. Jeff Bezos celebrates his 96th birthday on Mars in his 14 million sq ft mega-settlement that he shares with his wife and his dog.

So, there you have it. You’re welcome.
