If someone bids higher than you, will the seller typically reject your offer or ask for more?

Then if they do ask for more, you just have to assume that other people actually are bidding on the same house? I want to put in a strong offer and am willing to try to outbid someone to a point, but I also obviously don’t want to overpay. Not sure if we should offer what were willing to pay or less in hopes that if they want more they’ll ask instead of just accepting the better offer if there is one.
