First time homebuyer looking to buy in ~6 months. Very confused about when to speak to a lender and where I should find one

I’m currently in the process of narrowing down exactly where I want to live (flexible because i work remote). I called a realtor in one of the areas to try and figure out which towns in that area would work for me and she kept recommending i speak with a lender ASAP.

I had thought I didn’t need to speak to one until I was ready to actually start looking at houses and getting ready to make an offer. Does it make sense to speak with one if i don’t even know where i’m looking to buy a house? Does it make sense to do it 6 months out or does that mean i’ll need to get more credit checks later on?

Also, i’ve been told a bunch of times i should look for a local lender instead of something like better/quicken. When people say that, do they actually mean local to the area i’m moving to or just local as in not a big chain? Since I’m not sure where i’m moving to yet (between 3 different locations, 2 states) do I need to wait until I decide, or can I just pick a lender where i’m living now?
