Do I need to pay my water bill? Landlord has never given them to us over three years despite saying he would. We think we’re getting everything al once this Sunday.

First, I am just trying to keep peace in the house. I am not trying to get out of anything, so please don’t read motives into me. My wife is threatening to hardball the landlord and I just need information for moving forward.

I have been renting property in a multi-family unit in Connecticut since July of 2019. I like my landlord. I’ve gotten all bills on time except for one (2-3 days). We’ve taken good care of the property.

The lease says that we need to pay any water bills in excess of 100 dollars. Our landlord has spent years telling us that we’ve gone over and that we owe, and that he will eventually bring us the bills. He never has.

We’re about to move out. He has our 2,500 security deposit and will be coming for a walkthrough on Sunday. My wife is telling me that if the bills are too high, she does not want us to pay them. She says it’s unfair because nobody sets aside money for bills that never seem to show up. She said that we don’t have to pay for the first two years, since those were both year-long contracts; she says that he has to bring us bills within the contracted period.

She said if it is a few hundred dollars she’ll be nice and pay. But if the number is high, she wants to fight.

I feel overwhelmed by the situation and just want the best information so that I can prepare. Please do not assume motives on my behalf or make personal comments about my wife.
