Hi all, some context:
I live in Northeast USA and recently did a trip to Texas. Im considering living in Texas. One of my goals is to buy multiple rental properties, but i want my first home to be a home id live in at least 5 years while i buy other properties for renting. I know this wont be easy and maybe im just a young person who dreams too much, but that is what i want to do.
Originally i was thinking on dallas, because i saw houses were cheaper in those areas and my current job has offices in dallas and i am contracted with them for 1 year, just thought the move would be easier and sooner this way. I was able to be in Texas for 10 days and decided to do half in dallas and half in austin since i heard good things of austin.
I liked alot of areas in dallas, i like how the market is looking and i think i could see myself living there but i also felt everything was far from each other.
Then i went to austin and i loved it. Its not as mountainous as Southern California but its mountainous enough where you can get some nice views, and everything is close enough. I decided to look at houses in Austin and even though alot of the areas were a little higher than dallas, there were also houses a little north of austin that were around the same price range and in good areas.
Now im leaning to buying a house in austin area (round rock-georgetown area) and rental property a little out of austin. If i do move to austin Im considering buying rentals closer to san antonio since the market looks very cheap there. Only problem is my job has no offices there and im contracted to them till next year. They helped me pay for school and i would be in line for at most 20k (depending on the month i leave) if i left.
In terms of my real estate goals which would be a better option: the dallas plan or the austin plan?
I know this is my decision alone but i would like some intake to weigh my options.
Tl;dr – considering moving to texas to buy a house and multiple rental properties in the near future. Dallas was first option due to job having offices there and me being contracted to them till mid 2022 but i visited dallas and austin and like austin better. I am now considering buying a house in austin and rental properties near san antonio, but may have to wait longer on the move due to job. Which option would be better dallas or austin?
