Can you put an offer on two places at the same time?

Hi, first time homebuyer here with a simple question. I’m looking at two houses in the Seattle area which review offers on the same day. Can I put an offer into both of them and back out of the other? I’m assuming since earnest money isn’t paid until we reach mutual that there is no risk at that point. I’m worried about both accepting and being contractually obligated to two (although in this market that is unlikely).

Thanks!
