California: Can I even dream of buying a home?

I’ll try to keep it short. I’ve been living with my parents for the last few years (that may not be possible anymore soon) and I’ve been able to save some money because of that but now i’m thinking about my next steps and i’m very reluctant about just throwing money away at some ridiculously expensive apartment (as all apartments in this state seem to be).

I don’t have any credit, at my job I take less than 40k home a year and I may not even have a job in 1 month as I may have to leave my current one and I do have some savings that could help me in putting a healthy “downpayment” (I think that’s what it’s called). Basically I know nothing about real estate or home buying but I want to see if I can even dream or think of buying a house considering I have no credit, make less than 40k and might not even have a set job soon, and have savings which would nonetheless not be enough to buy a house outright.
