Buying vacant land in that owes back taxes -AZ

I just purchased a 5 acre lot in SE Arizona and I’d like to purchase another 5 acre lot nearby. It wasn’t listed for sale but I found the trustee that owned it and called him. I offered him $1000 on top of the back taxes, which are $3200. He said he’d do that deal as it’s one less headache for him to deal with.

How do I approach this scenario? Pay him the full amount and hope he uses it to pay the taxes? Pay off the taxes myself and him the $1000 and hope he transfers?

The land is in Arizona, I live in WA state, and he lives in CA…
