Sorry for the long post, but my wife and I are trying to determine what to do and thought I’d seek advice here.
A little background: I’m a teacher starting a job in Las Vegas this fall. My wife works from home. We’re planning on renting at first and hoping the market cools down a little.
Here’s the problem. My wife wants to get a house in the next year or so, but our plan is for me to eventually work abroad in international schools and settle somewhere abroad when we find the place we want to live in. Her mindset is we can rent the place out while we’re gone and sell it once we’ve found the place we want to settle.
I’m thinking this might be fine, but I’ve read a lot how property management from abroad can be a big headache and that real estate as an investment generally has a much smaller return rate than things like index funds. There’s also the possibility of the place being trashed or us not finding tenants.
I guess my question is here is if buying and renting is a good idea or if we should just build our savings more and buy where we want to settle?
