Has anyone ever approached a land owner about buying a farm/acreage that isn’t for sale?
There is a property about a mile from my parents acreage that is owned by an elderly widow that lives there with her daughter. The woman is in her mid 80’s and this farm has been in her family for a few generations. It used to be her summer home as she primarily lived down south, where her husband is from, but is no longer in good enough health to travel long distances.
The widow has two daughters, one of whom lives with her because of some medical issues. The other lives down south and would not move back. Neither of them have children. The widow has no siblings, so no nieces or nephews either.
This woman has been a family friend since I was a child and I frequently visit her and her daughter and bring them food. We also help them in the winter by running errands and helping with snow removal.
I consider her a friend and don’t want to offend her by asking if she would sell her home and some acres. My husband and I would love an old farmhouse that we can breathe some life back into, without stripping the home of its original charm.
How do I go about asking her without offending her?
