My mother has lived in the home that she owns since I was a kid (about 30 years). She has not kept it up, and it’s falling apart now. There is also a major mold issue. I think it’s very bad.
She is now too old to do much for herself, and I’ve finally convinced her to let me get her out of there. Her home is actually in a great location and, if it was in good condition, could easily sell for at least $500K right now. I don’t want to see her just loose all that value by selling as-is unless it’s absolutely necessary. So, I need some advice.
I’m thinking the first step needs to be getting someone in there to assess all of the problems. That way I can wrap my head around the cost of fixing/renovating things. If so, who exactly would that be? A home inspector? Some sort of contactor?
This is a very nice house that has pretty much sat stagnant for about 10 years. I don’t know how to start this process, and I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed by this. But the fact that she has FINALLY agreed to let me get her out of there is so welcome that I want to get the ball rolling ASAP. Any advice at all would be really appreciated. I just need to know where to start.
(Consider me completely ignorant of anything having to do with owning a home, because that is 100% the case.)
