Adding someone to deed

We purchased a house a few months ago and I want to be added to the deed as I pay half of everything for the house. I wasn’t added to it because our realtor said I’d have to be on the mortgage too, which wouldn’t have worked because I didn’t have a long enough job history. Can I be added to the deed without it being considered a gift to the irs? If I get added to the mortgage and the deed would it make any difference?
